Darken Wood returns to the Ancient Meadow, with a follow-up to the acclaimed 2017 compilation of “I + II”, featuring the previously unreleased “IV”. Enter the dark forests again, at times foreboding, and when the light breaks through the canopies, more peaceful than ever. III & IV boast a continuation of Darken Wood’s dedication to the old school of dungeon synth. From the outset, this release teems at the edges with synth-driven melodies, leading the hearkener into a world bursting at the seams with adventure, mystery and intrigue, and even melancholy. There is true magic and splendor in each track of this release, each reminiscent of wandering through worlds of the sword and the sorcerer, a time and a realm untainted by modernity. The instrumentation on this release features the familiar lot: there are occasional harps, bowed psaltery, plucked lutes, organs, horns (and plenty of synthesizer), and each masterfully layered to create an ambience attributable only to Darken Wood. In a word, this is atmospheric to the nth degree. Pro-tape limited to 50 copies. Each copy shipped with a sticker and large Darken Wood patch.

A dreamy, beguiling, nostalgic dungeon synth quest through the shires. But, it's so much more than that. The LP incorporates some unique key changes, field recordings and a lot of Mort Garson style synth work. It sometimes reminds me of old 70's PG horror soundtracks. The record is addictive melancholy inspiration. The ideal music for accompanying the dawning morning of an epic adventure.
